There are certain habits and qualities that freelancers need to possess in order to be successful, and the following are seven habits of highly effective freelancers.
1. They’re Organized.
Effective freelancers are extremely organized. They have a place for everything, and everything is in its place. They know exactly where the information they need is located, and they’re sure to add information to respective client’s folders as soon as possible in order to keep their production flowing smoothly. If you’re not organized, it will come back to haunt you. You may forget about a project you took on, or you may misplace important information that you need in order to complete a project. Being disorganized makes you look bad, and it could be the reason that clients opt to stop using you.
2. They’re Focused.
3. They’re Fearless.
Being a freelancer means being a boss, and this requires tough decisions to be made. Effective freelancers are not afraid to tell a client what they don’t want to hear, they’re not afraid to ask for the fees they deserve and they’re not afraid to go out and search for the information they need to complete an assignment. Being an effective freelancer means putting yourself in an authoritative role, and if you are a doormat, it’s not going to bode well for your future as a freelancer.
4. They’re Great Communicators.
It’s very important to stay in touch with your client, and effective freelancers know this. Make sure that you are willing to call, text, email or even hold face-to-face meetings with your clients in order to ensure they understand where you’re at or to retrieve any information you may need. If you meet with a client one time and then don’t speak until the project is over, you could end up with a failed project due to lack of communication. Always be willing to reach out to your clients to keep everyone on the same page.
5. They Have a Work-Life Balance.
Most freelancers find it difficult to separate work from their personal life. After all, as a sole employee, you’re always on call for your clients. If you want to be effective, you need to find that work-life balance. Create hours of operation and stick to them. If you stop working at five, then stop working at five. Don’t bring your work to the dinner table with your family, and don’t do family things during the times you dedicate to work. This work-life balance will help alleviate some of the stress in your life, and it can be beneficial for you, your family and even your clients.
6. They Have Basic Business Skills.
Freelancers have multiple shoes to fill. They need to be the salesperson, the finance person, the HR person and everything else in between. Effective freelancers know how to perform the basic business tasks. They can fill out a 1099 form. They can file their taxes (or at least keep accurate records for an accountant). They can pay bills. They can hold meetings. And they can complete their projects. The more understanding you have about how a business is supposed to run, the more successful your freelance career will be.
7. They’re Go-Getters.
As a freelancer, you can’t sit back and wait for the jobs to come to you. Instead, you have to go out there and find jobs. Effective freelancers are go-getters. They’re not afraid to put themselves out there and search for new clients and new projects to take on. They know where to look for freelancing jobs, and they’re always willing to take on new clients in order to build their portfolio and build their business.
